September news from Walsingham Farms Shop

September kicks off with a new event, the North Norfolk Food Festival (see below), being held at Holkham as part of the annual EDP Norfolk Food Festival. There are foodie events around the county all through the month, showcasing our many talented local producers. Visit www.norfolkfoodfestival.co.uk for more info. We’re having another go at one of the fun events, the ‘Battle of the Bangers’. Last year we did really well, winning the Chefs’ blind tasting (which has to be the one to go for!). In season now: still some soft fruit, including blueberries from Fairgreen Farm near King’s Lynn, plums from Leith Orchards at Burnham Thorpe, fresh cobnuts, juicy sweetcorn, new season onions, great tasting potatoes from cheesemaker Ellie Betts at Ferndale Farm Little Barningham, the maker of Norfolk Dapple, and English tomatoes are now at their peak.

NORTH NORFOLK FOOD FESTIVAL

Come and join us this coming weekend, 4th & 5th September, at a celebration of the best of food and drink in North Norfolk, in the Courtyard at Holkham Hall. We’ll be showing off our delicious hand-made pies, some filled with Holkham venison, but there’ll be around 60 independent producers there, including many of our regular suppliers. On the programme: cook-off challenges using local produce, talks and demonstrations, advice from Norfolk chefs. Open Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm.

LAVENDER KITCHEN EARLY BIRDERS' BREAKFASTS

Now open daily for breakfast from 8am, the Lavender Kitchen at Norfolk Lavender is a great stop-off before, or after, an early session on the coast with your binoculars. Every day 8am-11am. Light meals, coffee, tea, cream teas and snacks are served all day, with a choice of hot main lunch dishes, fresh soup and desserts available from 12 noon.

FROM OUR GARDEN

We’re harvesting much more produce this year from our own small kitchen gardens, both from the new raised beds at the Heacham shop, and the garden at Walsingham, thanks to help from Brian Beers, The Garden Farmer, who specialises in setting up fruit, vegetable and herb growing. We are cutting courgettes, apples, chillis, fresh herbs, radishes, lettuces and delicious cucumbers for the shops.

BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING
Join us at Walsingham between 9am and 12 noon on Friday 25th September when we offer you a delicious hot cup of coffee, and a chance to chat and taste some of our delicious cakes, as we take part in the national ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ event, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

BATTLE OF THE BANGERS!

25th SEPTEMBER

Come and support us as once again we enter our fine traditional sausages into this annual fun competition, pitting ourselves against some of Norfolk's other great butchers. We'll be outside the Forum in Norwich on Saturday 25th September from 9am-3pm, for the public to taste and vote for their favourite sausage, during the RNAA's annual Norfolk Food Fair.

HARVEST BEER OFFER, ST PETER'S GOLDEN ALE 12 for £19.99

We are offering a great deal for the harvest season: 12-bottle cases of St Peter’s Golden Ale at only £19.99. St Peter’s Brewery is housed in old farm buildings alongside the beautiful and historic 13th-century St Peter’s Hall near Bungay in Suffolk. Their Golden Ale is a highly distinctive light, golden ale, and we also stock a number of their other delicious varieties.
